Every Vote Counts: The Chatham Area Public Library Helps Get Out the Vote

Article Date
September 14, 2020

With just under fifty days until the General Election, the Chatham Area Public Library encourages all community members of voting age to get registered and exercise their right to be heard at the ballot box this November because Every Vote Counts. The Library will be offering a number of Every Vote Counts programs and activities in the weeks leading up to the General Election on November 3rd including:

National Voter Registration Day 2020 – Join us on September 22 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM on the Library campus for a Voter Registration Drive. The Library is partnering with Glenwood High School student groups and the League of Women Voters to be a part of this massive cross-country effort to register voters. The partnership will continue on Saturday, September 26 from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM with a second Voter Registration Drive. To get registered, bring two forms of identification (one must show your name and current address, and the second must show your name) and stop by the Library.

Meet the Candy-Dates: An Election Event for Kids – On Saturday, October 3 from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM, bring the children in your life to the Library to take part in an election to vote for their favorite candy-date! Kids will get to sample two types of nut-free candy then go into our kid-sized voting booth and cast their ballot. Participating voters will get a take-home craft kit to make their own "I Voted!" badge.

Every Vote Counts: Call for Original Poster Designs - We are inviting community members of all ages to create and submit original nonpartisan posters to encourage voting in the General Election on November 3rd. Stop by the Library to pick up your poster board, create your design, and return it to the Library. Posters will be accepted through November 3, will be hung in the Library windows, and digitized for inclusion in an online gallery on the Library’s website.

The Library will also provide a nonpartisan resource list on their website as a one-stop shop for election-related information. “Libraries are nonpartisan institutions which provide access to information and resources. They value democracy and work to advance civic engagement,” states Amy Byers, Library Director, “all of which are the impetus for our Every Vote Counts campaign.” For more information on these offerings and more, visit the Library’s website at www.chathamlib.org or call at 217-483-2713. Please note that the in-person activities are slotted to take place outdoors on our patio next to the café on the south end of the building. Social distancing and mask-wearing measures will be observed.
