You may not have heard of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), but it plays a big role in keeping libraries—like ours here in Illinois—strong, innovative, and accessible. IMLS is the primary source of federal funding for libraries and museums across the country, supporting things like early literacy programs, technology access, job training resources, and services for veterans and seniors. Unfortunately, recent cuts to IMLS put current and future funding in jeopardy. That could mean less support for core library services so many people rely on—right here at the Chatham Area Public Library and beyond.
If this is news to you, you’re not alone—and now is a great time to learn more. The links below offer background on what’s happening, why it matters, and how these changes could impact our community. And if you want to stand up for libraries and the people we serve, there’s also a link to get involved in advocacy efforts. Every voice counts when it comes to protecting access to information, education, and opportunity.
